March 4th: Social Media

This week is all about the outdoors and the women who have made a big splash on our planet with their historic contributions. We all have our “wins” in the outdoors whether it was the first time you climbed a mountain, or the first time you let a butterfly land on you. What is a “first” that you experienced outdoors, was it something you saw, or something you did? Share with us on social media by using the hashtag #GSoutdoorwomen

March 5th: In Her Own Words

“Do not give up. Keep on your quest.” This powerful statement is advice from Junko Tabei, the first woman to summit Mt. Everest and the Seven Summits, in one of her last interviews before her passing in 2016. What is your quest?

March 6th: Just for You

This challenge is just for you: Spend 15 minutes outside in nature. Take turns using each of your senses: touch, smell, feel the world around you. Write about what you experience.

March 7th: Deep Dive into the Outdoors

Want to learn more about phenomenal women who have ventured into the great outdoors? We have several recommendations! The National Geographic documentary film, “Jane”, dives into the incredible life and work of Jane Goodall. If your troop is interested in the world of surfing, the 2011 film “Soul Surfer” tells the story of Bethany Hamilton and her drive to continue surfing after a shark attack. If you’re looking for a lighter film that celebrates the great outdoors, you can never go wrong with a “Moana” movie night.

Book recommendations include Maisy Goes On a Nature Walk by Lucy Cousins (Daisy), In the Clouds by Elly MacKay (Brownie), River by Elisha Cooper (Junior), and My Life With the Chimpanzees by Jane Goodall (Cadette, Senior and Ambassador).
