A unique element of the equestrian program at Camp Sycamore Hills is the Vaqueras program. Since August, 2005, this program provides middle school and high school age girls opportunities to learn and improve horsemanship skills, and to develop leadership and teaching skills while serving other Girl Scouts.
Vaqueras assist getting horses ready for programs, teach ground skills to younger Girl Scouts and help riders with basic skills. Vaqueras also get riding lessons or other horseback experience.
The five-level upgrade process for Vaqueras provides motivation for girls to strive for excellence in all aspects of their participation, including safety, teaching, leadership and horsemanship.
Girls must be at least 12 years old and in 7th grade to participate. Vaquera trainings are generally in August and January but can be arranged as needed.
