First Aid/CPR Training

Before a troop participates in activities that have the potential for physical injury, we require that one adult with the troop be certified in First Aid and CPR.  Red Cross certification courses are offered by the council for a cost of $25. The troop will be reimbursed in the form of shop credit for one adult per year, if they take the course with the council.  Additional registered adults may complete the course, but will not be reimbursed.  National first-aid programs may be submitted but must be approved by the training department.

If you have the opportunity to get trained in council approved first aid/CPR, do it! You can take advantage of first aid/CPR training offered by chapters of the American Red Cross, National Safety Council, EMP America, American Heart Association or other sponsoring organizations approved by your council. Try to take age-specific CPR training. That is, take child CPR if you’re working with younger girls and adult CPR when working with older girls and adults. Caution: First Aid/CPR training that is available entirely online does not satisfy Girl Scouts’ requirements. Such courses do not offer enough opportunities to practice and receive feedback on your technique. If you’re taking a course not offered by one of the organizations listed in the previous paragraph, or any course that has online components, get approval from training department first.

Online Training

We currently offer online trainings. There are three required courses for every troop leader. All other required courses must be attended in person to receive training credit.

MANDATORY TRAININGS:

  1. Youth Protection: available here
  2. GSUSA Orientation online course: available here.
  3. Leadership Essentials online course: available here.

MANDATORY TRAININGS THAT MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO YOUR TROOP CAMPING AT ANY GIRL SCOUT CAMPS OR PUBLIC CAMPING SITES

  1. Camp Ready: available here
  2. Camp Prep: available here
  3. Camp Info and Procedures: available here
  4. Camping Skills: Offered in-person only at one of the Girl Scout camps. This class prepares leaders to camp with their girls. It is designed to be taken after completing three online courses above (Camp Information and Procedures, Camp Prep and Camp Ready). In this class, you will have a hands-on opportunity to learn about the following: knot tying, fire building, propane stove, knife safety and pitching tents. After completion of this course, you would be able to camp in any Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee cabins, tent units or pitch tents.  If you completed Camping Skills Level 1, you should only take the Camp Information and Procedures online course.
  5. Outdoor Cooking Enrichment: To be taken prior to your troop cooking outdoors over open flame. In this course, you will learn a variety of outdoor cooking skills to include: Dutch oven, box oven, coal cooking and learning about recipes to use in outdoor cooking. Outdoor cooking is now taught as enrichment to be taken after completion of Camp Skills. You may take it the same day or before you plan to use the skill with your troop.

OPTIONAL TRAININGS

Additional optional courses are needed as your troop activities evolve, such as skills classes for outdoor as your troop progresses and Green leaf trainings - a great supplement to enhance your leadership. Additionally, a registered adult with every troop should be certified in First Aid and CPR before the troop plans an outing or event in which there is risk of injury.
