Cheekwood Garden and Art Tours

Surround yourself with beautiful botanical gardens and inspiring artwork....

The vision statement for Cheekwood states, "Cheekwood will be cherished locally and recognized nationally for its unique ability to welcome visitors of all ages with one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor experiences reflecting its noted art and botanical collections displayed in one of the great American Country Place Estates."

Cheekwood offers guided and self-guided tours in the gardens and Museum of Art for groups of 12 or more (including adults). Girl Scouts can explore plants, habitats and the environment during our Garden Adventure tour, or learn about the history of Cheekwood and the art collection during the Discover Cheekwood tour. There are also several exciting changing exhibition tours each year! For a current listing of the available tours, please visit www.cheekwood.org. Visits must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance to get the Girl Scout rate.

Friends of Edgar Evins State Park
Edgar Evins State Park, approximately 6,000 acres on the shores of beautiful Center Hill Reservoir, provides excellent recreational opportunities and accommodations on one of the most beautiful lakes in the south. Named in memory of James Edgar Evins, a former state senator instrumental in the development of Center Hill Dam and Lake, the park has a cabin complex, camping, hiking, picnicking and a full service marina along with fishing and boating.

Activities are available year round. The Friends of Edgar Evins offer special events.

Lots of opportunities exist for service project hours or Silver and/or Gold Award projects. If you are able to donate your time and talents even if it's just for one day, check the Friends of Edgar Evins website for ideas or contact Ronica Evans, the Girl Scout coordinator for the Friends of Edgar Evins organization at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The park is located in DeKalb County, 60 miles east of Nashville and 20 miles west of Cookeville. The park entrance is four miles south of I-40 at exit 268. It is also accessible from State Highway 141.

Nine primitive campsites are available for a small fee on a first come first served basis.

Wetland Wonders - Wetlands Challenge

Complete activities toward the EPA Water Drop Patch project. Join the Discovery Center staff at the urban wetland area and discover what makes a stream healthy while exploring water habitat. Walk the boardwalk and search for signs of wildlife, trees and aquatic life. This program, offered April - October, emphasizes stream ecology and wetlands habitat.

A minimum of $42 is required. One adult admission is free for every 4 girls. Additional adults are $4.

After completing this program, Girl Scout Brownies will have completed requirements for the Water Everywhere try-it and #1 of the Eco-Explorers try-it. Girl Scout Juniors will complete requirements for #6 of the Water Wonders badge and #2 and #3 of the Earth Connections badge.

Participants work toward earning the Horse Rider badge. The four hour session provides hands on experience with the horses including grooming, saddling and riding. Depending on the experience of the riders, more practice may be required to complete the badge. This program is offered most weekends throughout the year and may be requested on weekdays.

Guided canoe and kayak trips on the Scenic Duck River near Columbia are available with Higher Pursuits. This guided program focuses on teaching or improving paddling skills, boater safety and discussions about local wildlife and history. Higher Pursuits provides a certified lifeguard for the trip in addition to quality boats and vest-style life jackets. The trip is 5 1/2 miles long on the Duck River in a section of the river that is part of a Tennessee Blueway and State Scenic River rich in wildlife and folklore. Most groups average 4 to 5 hours per trip.

Primitive camping is also available. (No electricity or running water. Higher Pursuits claims to have the fanciest outhouse in Maury County.) The camping area is located within minutes of a scenic hiking trail in the Duck River State Nature Area.

The canoe or kayak trip fee is $12.50 per girl or adult (a 50% discount off the regular price). The fee includes boat rental, life jacket, guide fee and program. Country Music Hall of Fame Patch Program

Celebrate music at The Country Music Hall of Fame Museum...

The Country Music Hall of Fame Museum offers a special patch program for Girl Scouts. To earn a patch, Girl Scouts must visit the museum and accumulate the required number of activity points. Some activities are free and some require tickets.

A special discount for tickets is available to Girl Scouts. The special Girl Scout discount for museum and Studio B tour as follows: Museum tour: $7 per girl; two adults admitted free with every 10 Girl Scouts. Additional adults are $12. Studio B tour: $10.99 per girl; $12.99 per adult. The monthly Fun for Family events are free.

Junior Badge Workshops at Discovery Center

Come to the Discovery Center and complete requirements for a badge. Programs last approximately 60-90 minutes. A maximum of two-badges may be scheduled per day. Reservations are required. Workshops may be scheduled on most Saturdays or on weekdays. Weekday programs must begin by 3:00 p.m.

The fee is $6 per girl with a minimum payment of $42, except for Let’s Get Cooking which is $8 per girl. One adult is free with every 4 girls; additional adults are $4. Adult members of Discovery Center are free. At least two adults must accompany each group. The cost of the program does not include the cost of the badge. Badges may be purchased from a Girl Scout regional office.

The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring is a hands-on museum and environmental center. Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors are invited to participate in a self-guided program and explore the fire engine, aquatic critters in the fresh water aquarium and learn about physics at the Super Slide. Participants will earn a Discovery Center patch.

This program is available most Saturdays or on weekdays. If planning to come on a weekday, the program must begin no later than 3:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Earn badges through martial arts and self defense training...

Bill Taylor's Bushido School of Karate

Girl Scouts can get assistance in earning badges through martial arts or self defense training. Bill Taylor has been conducting ladies’ self defense seminars in the Murfreesboro area for more than 30 years. Classes are 1 1/2 to 2 hours and are offered at no cost as a community service to Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. Visit the school’s website at www.bskonline.com.

Learn about caring for horses, equipment and other aspects of horsemanship...

Participants work toward earning the Horse Fan badge by learning about caring for horses and equipment and other aspects of horsemanship. The three hour session is primarily ground work but also includes a trail ride. This program is available on most weekends throughout the year and may be requested on weekdays.
